Kickstart Your Career: Top Tips from Our Industry Experts

7 July 2025
We caught up with Industry Liaison Officers, Donna Swarbrick and Paul Ross, who share some of their top tips for your next work opportunity.

Preparing for work, whether that’s in a work placement, or in your future career, is a very exciting opportunity.

It’s an excellent chance to put the knowledge you’ve gained in the classroom into practice, and it can serve as a valuable stepping stone towards your future career.

To help you make the most of the opportunity, we caught up with our Industry Liaison Officers, Donna Swarbrick and Paul Ross, who shared their top tips for career success

1. Be on time, every time

First impressions count — and punctuality shows you’re reliable and respectful.
Know your start time, plan your journey, and if something comes up, always let your placement or liaison officer know as soon as possible.

2. Look the part

Dressing appropriately shows you’re taking the role seriously.
Check the dress code in advance, arrive neat and presentable, and bring your best professional attitude. Smile, make eye contact, and introduce yourself confidently — body language speaks volumes.

3. Bring energy and enthusiasm

A positive attitude goes a long way. Be open to new tasks, ask questions, and show that you’re curious and eager to learn.
Treat every job — big or small — as a chance to grow your skills. Get stuck in and soak up as much as you can!

4. Communicate clearly and respectfully

Good communication is key in any workplace. Listen carefully, follow instructions, and don’t be afraid to ask any questions if you’re unsure. Always speak politely and professionally to colleagues and customers.

5. Reflect and grow

At the end of each day, take a moment to think:

  • What did I learn?
  • What went well?
  • What could I do differently next time?

If you’re on placement through College, use the ProPortal logbook to track your hours, record your progress, and identify areas to improve.

6. You’re not alone — stay connected

Remember, we’re here to support you. Your Industry Liaison Officer will check in regularly to make sure things are going smoothly and that you’re getting the most from the experience. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Why it matters

Work placements are a key part of your journey at EKC Sheppey College. They give you hands-on experience, build confidence, and help shape your future.

By following these tips — and staying curious, open-minded, and professional — you’ll not only get more out of your placement, you’ll also be laying the groundwork for a successful career.
