4 October 2024
There are a range of reasons why you should consider studying Construction with us here at EKC Sheppey College.

EKC Sheppey College offers you an exceptional environment if you’re looking to build a career in the thriving construction industry.

There are a range of reasons why you should consider studying with us:

State-of-the-Art Facilities:

At EKC Sheppey College, you’ll be learning in specialist workshops, which are the perfect environment to gain practical skills and knowledge essential for construction.

Our spacious brick workshop is equipped with individual bays, where you can practice bricklaying techniques in a realistic setting, complete with builder’s yard and professional cement mixers.

The carpentry workshop features professional-grade tools and workbenches, providing an ideal environment for both basic and advanced woodworking projects.

Key Employer Links:

Alongside your course, you will have the opportunity to work with key employers in the construction industry.

Many of these are based in the Sheppey and Sittingbourne area, meaning you’ll study in a location at the centre of new developments, with easy access to many opportunities.

These include Knauf, a global Construction company based in Sittingbourne, and Peel Ports, the UK’s second largest port operator, who operate the Port of Sheerness.

Our Industry Liaison Officer will help connect you to meaningful work placements that will give you the confidence to enter the construction and built environment industry.

Our Multi-Trade Option:

If you’re unsure which specific trade to pursue, the unique Multi Trade course allows you to sample aspects of all trades and health and safety.

This hands-on experience will help you discover what it is that you truly love about the Construction industry and will help you make an informed decision about where you want to go in the future.

Mitchell, who is studying Level 2 Bricklaying, started out in College on the Level 1 course and found the specialism that was right for him.

He said: ““Having progressed from Level 1, it’s been great to have the support of my teachers who are there for me as I learn new things.

Being in the workshop is so much fun, it’s quite a relaxed environment but you do a lot of work as well.”

Expert Tutors:

Our instructors bring years of industry experience to the classroom. They provide not just theoretical knowledge, but practical insights that prepare you for real-world construction challenges.

These include connections with tradespeople across the island, skill workshops to increase your knowledge of tools and practices, and understanding the best routes for you to get into Construction.

Daniel Irwin, Programme Director and Bricklaying Lecturer has been teaching students for nine years, and has lots of experience in the industry.

Speaking about his background, he says: “I started off in the construction industry at 15 years old. I started labouring for friend’s dad. I then got an apprenticeship in bricklaying and went to EKC Canterbury College.

“I think having this experience helps because I can relate to the students more. I have a similar background to them as I have always lived locally. As I have worked in industry, I know the demands and expectations that it requires.”

Key transferrable skills:

We recognise that the construction industry offers diverse career opportunities. Our programmes also prepares you for non-trade roles such as:

  • Project Management
  • Surveying
  • Health & Safety
  • Site Management
  • Architecture

Going out into the communities and working with local partners such as Sheppey United FC to take part in projects will give you the experience you need to fit into any role.

Whether you’re looking to specialise in a specific trade or explore the broader field of construction, we have the resources, expertise, and support to help you achieve your goals.
