Studying Public Services at EKC Sheppey College is about more than what you learn in the classroom.
Your days are varied, active and focused on building the skills you’ll need for the future.
From fitness training and practical drills to trips, events and employer experiences, every part of your course is designed to challenge you, build your confidence and prepare you for a career in the Public Services.
Here’s just ten experiences you could look forward to at our College:
Compete across Kent at KFE4Skills
KFE4Skills is an annual competition that brings together students from across the region to put their skills to the test. You’ll take part in teamwork challenges and drills, working under pressure and demonstrating your abilities in a competitive environment.
Get fit with FiitBOX
Public service roles often demand a high level of physical fitness, and College makes sure that you’re ready. Partnering with FiitBOX means that you get personalised fitness training as part of your course, ensuring you’re physically prepared for whatever role you pursue.
Go behind the scenes with Kent Fire and Rescue
Visiting local fire stations means you’ll take part in hose training and learn directly from firefighters with years of experience. These practical sessions give you a taste of what it’s like to work in the emergency services and how to handle future situations.
Meet employers at careers fairs
We know how important it is to connect with potential employers, which is why the College organises regular careers fairs. These are attended by a range of local and national employers, where you can ask questions, learn about job opportunities. One former student secured a role in the Prison Service after attending, supported throughout the process by their lecturers.
Perfect your Army drills
Build discipline, teamwork and confidence through Army-style drills. You’ll practise formations, follow commands and work together to complete tasks under pressure. These sessions give you an insight into the standards expected in uniformed services while developing focus and resilience.
Push yourself with a dip in the sea
Cold water swimming at Sheerness Beach tests both your fitness and mental resilience. This experience pushes you out of your comfort zone and helps build determination, stamina and teamwork. It’s a practical way to prepare for the demands of public service roles.
Represent your community at Remembrance events
Our Public Services students proudly play their part in the Remembrance Day Parade in Sheerness, joining the local community to honour those who have served. You can march in formation along the High Street, applying the drill techniques you’ve developed in lessons, and take part in wreath-laying as part of the ceremony.
Take on obstacle courses at Boonies
Take part in outdoor obstacle courses that test your fitness, teamwork and problem-solving skills. These sessions challenge you physically while encouraging you to work together and support each other. It’s a great way to build confidence in demanding situations.
Travel the world
Experiential learning plays a vital role in preparing students for careers in Public Services. Recently, students from EKC Sheppey College took part in an international study trip to Bangkok, where they gained valuable insight into global public service operations, including visiting local fire services. Alongside this, students immersed themselves in Thai culture, helping to build confidence, independence and teamwork.
Visits by experienced professionals
We work closely with local businesses, community groups and organisations to ensure that you get the most out of your education. As a Public Services student, you will attend industry talks from local employers, and visit organisations to see how they operate, including Elmley Prison Service, Border Force, the RAF and Kent Fire and Rescue.
