Hi, I’m Ashton. I’m currently on the Level 2 Digital and IT Skills course at EKC Sheppey College, I started in September.

The course has been great so far. Everyone in my class is friendly and I have rebuilt a friendship with a mate I have not spoken to since Primary School, we met in class on the first day, but I did not even recognise him! We are now good friends.

In our lessons we have been learning about how to use software such as PowerPoint, Word, Photoshop and Excel. We have also learnt how to use Copilot which is a form of AI.

For each of our projects we are given a Work Order which explains each task we need to complete. These are presented in a Word document. It is great as it gives us a breakdown of what tasks to complete and what software we need to use.

My favourite project has been a PowerPoint project in which we had to create a presentation to introduce acts to an imaginary music festival. For this project I had to research bands, use PowerPoint tools and find good quality images to insert into the work. I used tools such as the designer, notes and animations to improve my presentation. Matt, my tutor, jokes that Oasis really will be coming to Sheerness in 2025… I am not convinced!

PowerPoint is my favourite piece of software we have used so far this is because I find it easy to use. I like to explore the templates on there, which really add to the look of the presentation, helping it look professional. We have used Photoshop although there are so many complicated functions on there, we still have lots to learn. I am looking forward to exploring this software further moving forwards.

The main reason I chose to come to College is because you are treated like an adult, it is really different to school. There is respect between you and the tutors, they are really supportive and help you wherever you ask. Another bonus is that the College is also very close to my house, so it is easy to get here. I like that the college is small as this meant I knew my way around after being here just a week.

In the future, I would like to be a musician as I am in a band, but I know it is important to have a back-up plan as the Music industry is not easy to get in to. The skills I am learning in this course would aid me to work in many roles, I would look into office work, as IT support to help others with their computers.

If you’re considering this course, I’d say it is definitely worth it, once you understand the software it is easy! My days at College go very quickly and it is such a supportive, fun environment.
