With years of practical experience in the construction industry, Daniel, our Programme Director for Construction and Engineering, brings knowledge and a passion for supporting local learners, into the classroom.
We spoke to him about his journey into education, what motivates him, and what he finds most rewarding about teaching at College.

What is your background in Construction?
“I started off in the construction industry when I was a teenager. My first job was labouring for a friend’s dad. After I did this and enjoyed it, I then got an apprenticeship in bricklaying and studied at EKC Canterbury College.
“I think my background helps me relate to the students. I’ve lived locally all my life, worked in the industry, and I’ve also been a student myself. Therefore I understand the demands and expectations of the trade, and I know what it’s like to be in our learners shoes.”
Why did you make the move to education?
“For me, it was the opportunity to try and make a difference in my local community.”
What’s the most valuable information you’ve learned in the industry?
“While I was on site, I often helped train apprentices and new starters. That experience taught me the importance of patience.
“Some people take longer to learn, and that’s okay. It’s about supporting them through that process.”
“We offer a range of courses such as Level 1 Multi-trades, which gives learners a look into the industry, in addition to our Level 2 Bricklaying and Carpentry courses, which specialise in a trade.”

What’s your favourite part about working at EKC Sheppey College?
“I especially find it rewarding when students complete a task and feel proud of what they’ve achieved. This could be anything from building a small wall, passing an exam, or completing a practical assignment.
“The biggest highlight for me, however, is when they gain employment in their chosen trade. That’s when you know you’ve helped them take a real step forward.”
Can you tell us about a highlight of the year for Construction students?
“Students get the chance to take part in KFE4Skills against those from MidKent College and North Kent College.
“They get to compare their work against their peers to see how well they perform in everyday construction tasks.
“It’s a good chance for our learners to improve on their social skills and it really helps them with their confidence.”

What advice would you give someone considering studying at EKC Sheppey College?
“The College is very supportive. I’d say take a look around and consider your options.
“The most important quality you need to have in the trades is patience, patience, patience.”
