Level 2 Hairdressing learner, Rosie, secured a job after honing her hairdressing skills during a work experience placement at local Salon, Beez Neez.

We caught up with Rosie at the Salon to find out more about her time at College, what she’s loved, and what she’d love to do next.

What do you enjoy about studying Hairdressing?

The parts that stand out to me would be curling hair and creating hair-up styles. Overall, I’ve learnt quite a bit, like lots of ways to cut and style and the techniques behind these.

I think what I love about the Hairdressing course is that not every look needs a set structure, and you can use your own imagination. The course is about creativity.  I like the creative side of it, like you can decide how your finished style is and get more creative as you grow and develop.

What was your placement at Beez Neez like?

It was great. I was here for four weeks, and I did lots of different tasks. I washed hair and blow-dried models. I also did styling on the Sally heads, tidying and maintaining the Salon, and even some customer service work on reception.

I think it’s really helped with my confidence and being more comfortable around new people, which I used to struggle with a lot.

I liked meeting new people and getting to interact with other clients and learning what it’s like to really be in a salon.

What’s been the biggest benefit of taking part in work placement?

I’d say that it’s the fact that you get to see professional stylists working. I’ve been able to talk to the other stylists that are training as well, as the Salon has a few apprentices. I get to see how their days are, what techniques they use and visualise how they go about treatments.

It’s also nice to see how they do things differently to me and different to what we may do in the College. This opportunity has let me see what it’s like to actually run a Salon.

How does it feel to be offered paid work as a result?

I’m very pleased that I’ve been offered paid work here when I’m not in College. I’d love to get a full-time job in a Salon and focus on cutting and styling, so this is great.

I feel like I have much more experience around new people and talking to new clients, and I’m overall just glad that I’ve got to meet really nice people.

We also spoke to salon owner Sammy Jo, who was full of praise for Rosie and her work ethic. Sammy Jo previously studied Hairdressing herself at EKC Sheppey College.

Speaking about Rosie’s experience in Beez Kneez, she said:

“She’s done really well. Although this was her work placement, we didn’t have to worry about Rosie. She got on, she was friendly, and the customers and staff loved her straight away, so she’s fitted in really nicely.

“As Thursdays can be a quieter day for us, we trained her in Blow Drying, practicing on some of the staff and on Sally heads, as well as improving her reception skills. Straight away, she’s got stuck in at every opportunity which was great to see.

“We’ve loved having her here so much that we’re pleased to have offered her paid work on the weekends for example, so that she can gain even more Hairdressing experience.”

Thanks to Beez Neez and Sammy-Jo for supporting students like Rosie, who is now flourishing as a result. If her experience has inspired you, consider studying our Hairdressing courses.
