Bricklayers bring home medals at the KFE4Skills construction heats

20 February 2026
EKC Sheppey College bricklayers secure top placements at the KFE4Skills Construction Heats with their decorative '26' brickwork designs.

Our Bricklaying students have been busy showing off their technical skills at the KFE4Skills construction heats. Held at EKC Folkestone College on 12 February, the event saw students from across East Kent Colleges Group compete for a spot in the regional finals.

The task required students to build a wall that included a decorative ’26’ brick detailing. Our students performed brilliantly, with Nicole and Archie bringing home second and third place in the senior bricklaying category.

Ashley Betteridge, Head of Department at the host College, noted: “The students have engaged really well with the tasks set. They have represented themselves brilliantly today. I’m proud of what they have achieved under pressure.”

The competition allows students to benchmark their skills against industry standards. By working outside their usual environment, they build the resilience and adaptability needed for a successful career in the construction industry.

The support of our industry partners is a huge part of these events. The event was sponsored by a number of local companies. These included JDW Tools and FixingsAbbots Construction and Persimmon Homes. Adrian Walker from JDW commented: “I was very impressed with the students’ work. Some of them have real talent.

“We want students to understand that the quality of their work is influenced not only by their skill but also by the tools they use. By introducing them to manufacturers and industry standards now, we aim to give them the knowledge they need to make the right choices in their careers.”

Winners were celebrated in an awards ceremony at the end of the day. Alongside their trophies and certificates, students also won a range of trade-specific equipment that will contribute to their on-going training.

For Nicole and Archie, these awards are a testament to their dedication to their trade as they continue to develop their expertise.
