Autumn Community Week Roundup

18 November 2024
Our Autumn Community Week has seen students and staff from across the College take part in social action projects.

Community Week is an ongoing commitment where students and staff from across the College take part in social action projects.

It is a wonderful opportunity to use the skills they have learnt or are currently learning by putting them into practice to help the local community.

This Autumn, we’ve completed a lot of work with Queenborough School & Nursery, let’s take a look at what our students have been doing for the school this week:

Multi-trades | Bamboo Fencing

Students work tirelessly to clear overgrown bushes and thorns that had begun to protrude through the existing fence in the Nursery play area. After tidying the area, they fitted bamboo fencing to keep the space secure and safe for the children.

Check out the before and after pictures:

Media | Forest School Resources

Media students have been busy creating new resources for the school’s Forest School. They have adorned wooden slices with different letters to help the children learn their alphabet, and created woodland themed clay tiles to decorate the area.

Brick | Clearing and Preparing the Forest School

Staff and students spent the week working on the school’s Forest School area. Since the school’s Forest School lead injured herself earlier in the year, the area has become overgrown, so our students took it upon themselves to help clear the area.

They’ve been busy weeding the area to remove all unwanted thistles and overgrown shrubbery. The students cleared and created pathways, laying bark chippings to make the space safe and ready for the children to use again.

When we caught up with the students, Nicole, said: “When we arrived everything was very overgrown and there were a lot of weeds so the area wasn’t safe for the little ones. It’s great to give back to the community and help the younger children out.”

Other Community Week projects around campus included:

Carpentry | Remembrance Soldiers

Carpentry students cut out soldier figures to mark their respects for Remembrance Day. They have been able to put their new skills in practice.

Hairdressing | Fundraising for Joules

Hairdressing students are busy supporting the national fundraising efforts for Joules, a local young girl who has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. On Friday they spent the day in their pajamas and collected sponsors from friends, family and staff around campus. All profits made from client treatments within the Salon on Tuesday and Friday have also been donated to the cause.

If you would like to donate to the family, please visit the GoFundMe page.

As part of the national fundraising efforts, students have also taken part in the ‘Dancing for Joules’ Tiktok challenge. They created their own video featuring Alexandra, Principal of EKC Sheppey College.

It has been great to see so many projects happening this Community Week, with some to develop further over the coming weeks and months.
