After studying on an ‘Introduction to College’ (Level 1) programme at EKC Sheppey College, Rio discovered a passion for technology that inspired him to take the next step into further education.

With a curiosity about how technology will shape the future, he is keen to expand his knowledge and build skills that could one day help him achieve his ambitions of running his own business.

We caught up with Rio to find out more about his journey, what he’s enjoying most about studying Level 2 Digital and IT Skills at EKC Sheppey College, and his advice for future students considering their next steps.

Why did you choose to study Computing?

“I was on an ‘Introduction to College’ (Level 1) course previously here in Sheppey. There were a few other options, but I particularly chose IT because I wanted to know about all the different technologies and get taught in a different way to school.

“The course I did helped me get into Level 2 Digital and IT Skills and it allowed me to explore my options for the future as well.”

What are you excited about learning throughout the Level 2 course?

“I’m excited to learn more about AI generation and I want to know how they’re going to build robots that are going to help us and take over some jobs in the future.

“I was also excited to learn about troubleshooting for example and get taught different things so that in the future, I know what to expect.”

What do you like about studying Computing so far?

“I’m happy about this course so far, because you can do all different types of things, such as learning about different technologies, coding, and also other things.

“It’s actually really interesting, and the teachers are lovely in the class.

“You don’t really get taught that stuff at school, like robots and AI, and one day that will be the future.”

Do you have an idea of what you’d like to do once you finish College or what you might want to do in the future?

“I’d like to run a business. If I do pass Level 2, I’d like to run maybe a Computing business, or a shop, a phone shop, and then I can fix and repair things.”

What’s your favourite part about studying here at Sheppey?

“It’s a small space and there are very lovely people. You’re welcome anytime, and everyone supports you.”

Rio previously won the ‘Pathway Champion’ award for Professional Services, during his studies on the ‘Introduction to College’ course.

If you had advice for a student who’s thinking about College, what might it be?

“I’d say, do it, because nothing else is stopping you. Just go for it. Think about yourself and think about the future. If you really are interested in it, do it. What’s stopping you?”

Thank you to Rio for sharing his experiences and insights into studying Computing with us.
