Our Public Services students proudly played their part in this year’s Remembrance Day Parade in Sheerness, joining the local community to honour those who have served and represented the country.
The parade was the culmination of a morning of remembrance at the College, where students welcomed veterans and dignitaries to the Refectory for tea and biscuits. They also had the honour of meeting and hearing from Paul Auston DL, the Deputy Lieutenant for Swale, who represents His Majesty The King in the local area.
Paul spoke about his role as the link for Swale, overseeing the King’s Award for Voluntary Service and supporting local cadet forces, including the Isle of Sheppey Sea Cadet Unit.
He also discussed his work with Demelza House, where he is a long-standing Trustee and now Chairman, and encouraged students to think about how they can contribute to their own communities, and what their career in the Public Services may look like.
Following the visit, the students took part in the Remembrance Day Parade along Sheerness High Street. The group showcased the professionalism, discipline, and teamwork that are central to their course as they marched in formation, applying the drill techniques they have been practising during their lessons.
As representatives of the College, the students played a key role in the ceremony by laying wreaths to honour fallen service personnel.
The experience also enabled them to develop key employability skills such as leadership, communication, and community engagement, while also gaining first-hand insight into life as a member of the Public Services.
Level 2 Public Services student, Louise, is one of the students who took part in the morning greeting the veterans. When asked what she loves about her course, she said:
“We do drills every other Wednesday, which is quite good, though it takes a lot of practice — you have to go over things loads of times to get them right. It’s quite structured, but it helps build discipline, which I think is important for Public Services.”
Students from our Business and Computing departments also got involved with this year’s Remembrance Day service, by designing and 3D-printing Tommy soldier table decorations.
Experiences like this take place throughout the year for our students, and are a great way to help them develop the confidence and professionalism, that will support them in future roles within the Public Services.
