Course overview


The Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry at EKC Sheppey College is a full-time
course for students who want to develop the skills needed for a career in
carpentry and construction. If you enjoy working with wood and creating
structures, this course will help you gain the confidence and expertise to
succeed in the construction industry.


You will learn in well-equipped workshops with guidance from experienced
tutors. The course covers essential carpentry skills, including shaping timber,
assembling doors, constructing frames, and building staircases. You will also
learn important safety practices to ensure work is carried out correctly and
responsibly on site.


Throughout the course, you will develop precision, planning, and
problem-solving skills, essential qualities for any carpenter. Tasks will
increase in complexity as you progress, helping you build the knowledge and
abilities needed to take the next step in your training or career.


On successful completion, this qualification prepares you to progress to
higher-level carpentry courses, apprenticeships, or entry-level work in the
construction sector.

Course information


This course will introduce you to the core skills and techniques used in
carpentry and joinery, giving you a strong foundation for future training or
employment in the construction industry. You will develop practical abilities,
industry knowledge, and confidence working with timber and woodworking tools.


Topics and skills you will cover include:



  • Health and Safety in Construction: Learn how to work
    safely in workshops and on site, follow safety procedures, and use protective
    equipment correctly.

  • Basic Tool Skills and Maintenance: Understand how to use
    and maintain a range of carpentry tools, including both hand and power tools,
    to ensure accurate, safe work.

  • Shaping Timber for Floorboards: Develop precision in
    measuring, cutting and preparing timber to fit flooring and other structural
    elements.

  • Making and Assembling Doors: Learn how to manufacture,
    fit and install doors to the correct specification and finish.

  • Building Frames: Gain the skills needed to construct
    timber frames, wall studs and structural supports used in modern building
    work.

  • Creating Staircases: Explore the techniques and accuracy
    needed to plan, cut and assemble stair components.

You will practise these skills in our well-equipped workshops, learning how
to approach tasks with accuracy, organisation and attention to detail. You will
also have the chance to take part in national skills competitions, such as KFE4Skills , and work on community projects, including Spring Community Week . These opportunities help you apply
your skills in different settings, build teamwork and problem-solving abilities,
and prepare you for future progression.
